How the modules work

A multistage adaptive test

Each section is split into two back-to-back modules of equal length. The first module mixes easy, medium and hard questions to gauge your level. How you do on it decides whether the second module leans harder or easier.

No gaming the order. Once you start a module, its questions are fixed and won't change based on your answers. Focus on getting each question right.

Easier Module 2

Section 1

The Reading and Writing section

Each question is built around a short passage or a pair of passages, followed by a single multiple-choice question. There are no long passages with several questions each, as on older versions of the test.

64 minutes 2 × 32-minute modules 54 questions Passages of 25–150 words

Passages come from four subject areas

  • Literature
  • History / Social Studies
  • Humanities
  • Science

The four content domains

Every module includes questions from all four.

Information and Ideas

Comprehension, analysis and reasoning about texts and data displays like tables, bar graphs and line graphs. You locate, interpret, evaluate and combine information.

Craft and Structure

Vocabulary in context, rhetorical analysis, and drawing connections between related texts.

Expression of Ideas

Revising writing so it communicates more effectively and meets a specific rhetorical purpose.

Standard English Conventions

Editing for grammar, sentence structure and punctuation.

Within each module, questions are grouped by the skill they test and ordered from easiest to hardest, so questions get harder as you move through each group.

Section 2

The Math section

SAT Math focuses on the math most relevant to college coursework and career readiness, across four content areas. All four appear in both modules, and questions run from easiest to hardest within each module.

Test-taking strategies

8 strategies for a higher score

  1. 01

    Annotate as you go

On Reading and Writing, use the built-in annotation tool to highlight text and leave yourself notes on each short passage.

  2. 02

    Don't chase answer patterns

Correct answers are spread randomly across the choices. Use the Option Eliminator to cross out answers you know are wrong instead of guessing from a pattern.

  3. 03

    Ignore difficulty labels

You won't be told whether a question is easy, medium or hard. Give each one your best as it comes.

  4. 04

    Always guess, never skip

There's no penalty for wrong answers. An educated guess, ideally after eliminating a choice or two, beats a blank.

  5. 05

    Know your tools

Learn the built-in Desmos graphing calculator and the Math reference sheet, or practice with your own approved calculator.

  6. 06

    Take a full practice test

A full-length test in Bluebook gets you used to the timing and interface, including any accommodations you will use.

  7. 07

    Review every result

After a practice test, go through each question and explanation, then focus your practice on the skills you missed.

  8. 08

    Take care of the basics

Sleep well, eat before you go and try to stay relaxed. The test isn't designed to trick you.
